Sailing Report – April 2018

By Holly Sears

I have been hearing about the winter adventures of many of our sailors and look forward to hearing more as our new on-the-water season at Sebago approaches. Tracy Kornrich and I have been sailing at Seawanhaka throughout the winter, Dino Ness has been sailing up in Westchester (and doing some curling too), David Cripton has been training for Laser Masters Worlds for this coming Fall in Ireland, Mia Brandt and Paul Clifford have been competing in the Albacore and Paul competed and won the Laser Radial Masters in Florida!!! (congrats Paul!), Lissa and David Solnick have been traveling and sailing in Aero competitions, and Torben Kuepper traveled to Florida for Laser training for the second year in a row. We are all looking forward to being back on Jamaica Bay, and sailing in our home waters.

The Sailing Committee met over the winter to schedule our events and to socialize a bit. Our calendar for the upcoming season is listed below. In addition to these dates, other events will be added via our sailing list and calendar as the opportunities present themselves. Events are listed on the sailing calendar towards the bottom of the sailing page of the club website https://sebagocanoeclub.org/sailing/. SAVE THE DATES – be sure you can participate! It is always more fun with more people.

Of special note: first, in addition to our usual events we have added a new sailing class designed for those who have taken our sailing class and can handle a boat on their own and who want some more practice and advanced instruction. We are calling this our Advanced Beginner/Intermediate Workshop. There will be limited enrollment based on the number of boats available. And secondly, a Team Racing day has been included for the second year.

As I write this article, our Annual Sailing Class still has room (June 16 and 17, members only. The fee is $185). If you are interested, let me know as soon as possible. I will be scheduling an Instructor workshop soon.

We will also try to add some other instructional workshops, such as Laser Sailing 101, Docking and Launching Practice, Racing Rules, Race Training, Advanced Sunfish Sailing and perhaps an evening sail or two, depending on our level of interest and as instructors or organizers are available to run the added events.

Don’t forget to use the sailing email list to find sailing buddies and arrange for impromptu sails throughout the season. See you out there!
