Commodore’s Report
Once again, we are at that special time of year between the Thanksgiving leftover potluck event and the Frostbite Regatta. This year’s Thanksgiving paddle was the best-attended I remember, despite the windy forecast and cooler temperature. I for one was thankful to be back in my kayak with my friends after too long a time…
Sea Kayak Report
Your new kayak chair here. First, I want to thank Tony Pignatello for an amazing year of programming and applaud him for his many years of service and four years as sea kayak chair! …
Sailing Report
Our typical Spring sailing season was nearly a bust this year, as the expected dock replacement did not get underway until well into April. We were forced to forfeit all but two of the races for our Spring Series with no way to launch the boats, and no committee boat either. But after that we had a wonderful season…
Canoe Report
This season, the Canoe Committee focused on four areas of activities related to instruction, high adventure, family activities and public trips. The Canoe Committee exists in a virtual and inclusive world, drawing participation from Sebago kayakers, sailors, rowers and their families…
Shining a Light on the Rowing Committee
Right off the bat, we want to get the facts into the light – yes, we exist, and yes there are some signs of activity among the members of our committee!…
Boat Shop News – The Point Comfort 23
After a year and nine months of construction, we actually have an end in sight for Canarsian, the club’s new launch and safety boat. A boat this size, even a simple one like our center console Point Comfort 23, has what seems like an endless number of details to resolve and acres of surface area to sand, epoxy coat, sand, paint, and did I mention sand?…
Pool Sessions
It is officially winter, and the Sebago Pool Sessions that take place at the Flushing Meadow pool are set to start on Sunday, December 4…
The official time frame for each pool session is from 8:45 am to 11:00 am each Sunday, but we request that all arrive early to prep and
New Plotting from the Garden Gnomes
There are a lot of things growing on our little spot of paradise. Some are weeds, but as of last year, many are wildflowers…
The New Garden Shed
Alongside the garden plot restructuring, we will have a new, custom-designed and -built shed to house all the gasoline-powered lawn equipment, rakes, shovels, and garden paraphernalia. Building a new shed will achieve several things at once. We’ll get the gas fumes out of container 11, and expand the boat storage in that space. We’ll move the garden equipment closer to the central gardening area…
Trash Bash Brings in Big Haul
Sebago Canoe Club proudly participated in the annual New York State Beach Cleanup on September 24th. Over the course of the day, several teams of volunteers collected man-made debris along a mile of the Paerdegat Basin shoreline…
Sebago Canoe Club Alumni – a Part of Your Proud History
In December, 1967 I joined the Saint Francis Prep Flatwater Canoe and Kayak team. My introduction to the team was at the Metropolitan Avenue pool and bath house in Williamsburg. At the time, I was a member of the school swim team which practiced at the facility. The canoe team, moderated by Brother Louis Cunningham, swam for conditioning in the off-season at the same time…
The 2016 HRGF Kayak Team Building and Racing Project
When Theodore Roosevelt was asked if it were true that carrying a lighted torch would protect him from a lion, he supposedly answered, “It depends on how fast you carry it.” Teddy’s wit won here, but if your self-esteem and bragging rights as a kayaker depended on it how could you meet the challenge outlined below?
The Ghost Ship of Sutton Hoo
A November New York Times article about explorers finding a “lost world of wrecks” in the Bulgarian waters of the Black Sea with at least 44 wrecks prompted me to work with the information and pursue it…
