Annual Sail Report 2018

By Holly Sears

Another fabulous sailing season at Sebago has passed. We finished the year with close racing in our annual Fall Series, the Eoin Delap Cup, with multiple ties and places often separated by less than one tenth of a point! Here is the final tally for the series (link – https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1N128mXxL9Cbbk9AKP7yaceIqCtOJjN9q2qvTM8Mn4Bo/edit#gid=0). We had over twenty participants throughout the series with twelve qualifiers (those participating in at least three races, and helping with RC for one of those) spanning six race days and 38 races. Congratulations to the top placers. In the Laser class Tracy Kornrich won 1st, Holly Sears 2nd, and David Cripton 3rd. In the Sunfish class, Patrick Daniels won 1st, Dino Ness 2nd, and Boris Mezhibovskiy 3rd. Winners Tracy and Patrick share the Eoin Delap Cup!

The spring and summer season included many of our usual activities – the Spring Racing Series, the annual Sailing Class and the monthly cruises (including the August traditional boat cruise). But we also had some impromptu clinics and weekend sailing and training that included Laser 101, Racing 101 and Rules training. For the second year in a row we had a Team Racing Day (thanks Paul Clifford) and for the third year in a row we had a Double-hander Workshop (thanks David Cripton). We continue to welcome new sailors from all over the world (and from the SCC paddlers) into our group.

Also, our sailors are participating in events far and wide. Paul Clifford and Mia Brandt have been racing and placing in the Albacore class internationally, David and Lissa Solnick have been racing with the Aero class in the US and Europe, and David Cripton sailed the Laser Worlds in Ireland, sailing Eoin Delap’s Laser. Eoin is our Fall Series honoree namesake, a world class sailor, and former Sebago member. Dino sails in events up and down the tri-state coast in a Dyer Dinghy, Laser and a double-hander boat. And Tracy and Holly continue to frostbite their Lasers at Seawanhaka Yacht Club in the winter.

As we finish the season, we are working on repairing our boats and gear for the 2019 season and we will begin planning for the spring with a winter meeting – date TBD – in early 2019. If you would like to be included on the sailing group email list contact Holly at sailing@sebagocanoeclub.org.

Our club boats have been put to bed for the winter, but if you have the gear and chops and if the weather is cooperative we’ll bring in the New Year on New Year’s day at the SCC Frostbite Regatta with a sail on Jamaica Bay.
